  • Coliform bacterial retroperitoneal inflammation may arise from numerous sources:
    • Kidney (pyelonephritis).
    • Colon (diverticulitis).
    • Appendix (appendicitis).
    • Pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Gram-positive cocci may cause a psoas abscess (image A) & (image B) in children due to tonsillitis, otitis media, or cutaneous furuncle.
  • Acid-fast bacilli can cause a cold abscess, usually confined to the psoas, arising from a tuberculous vertebra.
