2018 Annual Urology Advocacy Summit
PSA Screening
AUA 2017 Annual meeting | Boston, MA
Provided over $1.5 million in research funding to 65 young researchers with new investigations in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of urologic diseases and conditions.
Completed studies to enhance research funding opportunities:
Physician Scientist Residency Training Award
Addresses a critical gap in the urology research workforce by supporting an intensive, three-year research training program during urology residency to enable physician scientists to successful compete for independent research funding later in their careers.
Research Education for Community Practices
To increase opportunities for community-based urologists to engage in research, and to address the need for increased clinical trials for urology patients.
Success in Community-based Urology Research Workshop
Focusing on the essential elements of successful community-based research, the benefits to practices and their patients, and providing networking opportunities with leaders in community-based research.
AQUA Registry
The AUA recruited 483 urologic practices consisting of 3,190 providers from 47 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
Data Grants
Twelve grants awarded, funding 14 research projects.
Census
State of Urology Workforce and Practice in the United States
January 2017
Dr. Rainer Engel, curator of the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History for 19 years and AUA Historian for six years, collected many unusual artifacts in his time and staged 17 exhibits on the history of medicine at annual meetings throughout the United States. He and his beloved wife, Dorothy, spent many hours working in the museum, redesigning it once at the AUA Headquarters on Charles Street and again when the AUA moved to Linthicum.
April 2017
The Didusch Museum has a new exhibit on the history of the catheter, one of the earliest medical devices created and used on many continents since antiquity. Fascinating artifacts illuminate this exhibit: sets of antique silver catheters, early ivory and gutta-percha catheters, a copy of the silver catheter Ben Franklin created for his brother, a hollow walking cane and an umbrella (both ivory-tipped) that provide storage for catheter and lubricant so the carrier could discretely self-catheterize.
May 2017
The history of the kidney (a renal retrospective) was presented in Boston as part of the American Urological Association's 2017 Annual Meeting. The kidney is the organ that rather defines urologists and centers them on the entire genito-urinary system. Learning about its rich history is a fascinating and important lesson for urologists.
