Residents Bowl
Designed to foster a spirit of competition and Section pride, the AUA Residents Bowl is the not-to-be-missed event of AUA2024. Each of the eight AUA Sections will field a team of residents that includes one international trainee and go head-to-head in an ultimate battle of the brains. Now in its eleventh year, the AUA Residents Bowl will test residents' knowledge in different urological subspecialties, the history of urology and important new research findings.
The Residents Bowl will be held in the Residents Pavilion (Booth #159) in the Science & Technology Hall.

Originally from Sudan, Ahmed Abdalla grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma and spent most of his childhood there. Ahmed moved to Sudan for high school, before coming back to Oklahoma to attend OSU. He then moved to Texas for work, before eventually attending medical school at Texas Tech. He is now a resident of the great city of Philadelphia. He enjoys playing soccer and watching football (Go Pokes!).

Micaela Arbizu is thirty-one years old and is from Hilario Ascasubi, a town near Bahía Blanca. She studied at UNS (Universidad Nacional del Sur) and then began her urology residency at Durand Hospital, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is currently in her third year. Dr. Arbizu does not know yet what she will pursue following training, but her primary areas of interest are in endourology and genitourinary reconstructive surgery.

Joanna is currently a fourth year urology resident at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She received her BA from the University of Southern California, where she majored in Health and Humanity, an interdisciplinary social science major aimed at understanding health and human experience. She then obtained her Masters in Bioscience in Clinical and Regulatory Affairs from the Keck Graduate Institute. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2010 in Film & Television production at New York University and worked for several years as an event planner and film producer before realizing her passion for medicine. She completed the post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at Columbia University in 2015 and moved to Albany, NY for medical school. She is now completing her residency in Urology at Maine Medical Center and is eager to continue practicing general urology in her home state of Maine when she graduates. In her free time she enjoys exploring the outdoors with her husband James, their 1-year-old son Leo, and their 3 dogs Zoli, Gordon and Marty McFly.

Chris’s interests have varied from chemistry to astronomy to health policy, and he has earned degrees from Harvard, Cambridge, and Stanford. Currently, he is interested in urologic oncology and is working on research involving the genomics of bladder cancer, with special interest in whole transcriptome sequencing and visualizations of complex data. When he’s not cramming urology-related trivia, Chris also enjoys exploring the outdoors by foot, bike, or boat, and he enjoys cooking (or rather sampling) good food with his wife and young son.

Currently, he is completing a fellowship in Andrology at the University of Miami, Desai Sethi Urology Institute, USA. Monika Gasiorek was born in Poland and later grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. She moved to Washington, DC for college to study international relations, but about halfway through decided to pursue medicine instead. She moved to Texas for residency training and will continue the journey west to Seattle for fellowship this summer.

He attended Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson for medical school training and landed in Shreveport in the summer of 2019. Madeleine grew up in Santa Maria, California. She was accepted to the combined baccalaureate/MD program at University of Southern California, completing degrees in Biological Sciences and Occupational Therapy. She took a year off in between undergraduate and medical school at USC to live in Guatemala for 6 months, learning Spanish and volunteering in local public health centers with sex-workers. In medical school, she spent a year doing research with Dr. Sia Daneshmand on frailty using perioperative physical fitness testing and wearable fitness trackers. She stayed at USC for residency and ultimately fell in love with URPS (formerly FPMRS). She is excited to be starting an URPS fellowship at UCLA this summer!

Emily Clennon is a PGY4 in Urology at Oregon Health & Science University. She captained her high school's Scholastic Bowl and Science Olympiad teams, competed in state in a vocabulary competition, and was state champion in Epidemiology affirming her status as the nerdiest person in central Illinois. She received her undergraduate degree in Biological Chemistry at Grinnell College where she ran track and managed the sexual health information center to shore up counterpoints to her nerdiness. She received her MD and MPH from OHSU, mentored by the venerable Dr. Jasper Bash, and is currently applying into pediatric urology fellowship. She is currently serving as chair of the Policy and Advocacy Resident/Recruitment Workgroup, so contact her with any questions about getting involved in advocacy (not about urological trivia)!
Ryo Shiode, MD

Dr. Ryo Shiode lives in Ehime prefecture, Japan. Ehime prefecture is also home to the oldest hot spring in the country, “Dogo Onsen.” He is in his second year of working as a urology resident. In the future, he wants to specialize in kidney transplants and robotic surgery. Ryo’s hobby is traveling; and while he’s been to Hawaii, he has not visited continental North America. He loves American culture and looks forward to experiencing it first-hand.

Jessica grew up in Dallas, TX, completed her undergraduate, masters and medical school at the University of Texas at Austin, and was overjoyed to head westward after matching at OHSU. She is in her fourth year of training and plans to go into general urology after residency. In her free time, she has fully embraced all the Pacific Northwest has to offer. She loves hiking, camping, and skiing with her husband and daughter.

Jonathan was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He completed degrees in violin performance and psychology at Northwestern University. He then joined the US Army and completed medical school at the Uniformed Services University. He is currently a PGY-4 at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. If he's not in the hospital, he can be found spending time with his wife and newborn son or teeing off at Navy-Marine golf course.
