• Offered new Bladder Cancer educational series focusing on emerging immunotherapies
  • In collaboration with the Society of Urologic Oncology, developed a resident training program on Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer, combining live and online learning opportunities
  • Added new content and features to the Urology Core Curriculum, including new PowerPoint presentations

ADVOCACY

2018 Annual Urology Advocacy Summit

  • Program submissions from all eight AUA Sections, 15 urologic specialty organizations and nearly a dozen patient advocacy groups.

PSA Screening

  • Continued our advocacy work to ensure men’s access to appropriate prostate cancer screening by nominating a urologist to review evidence report that informed the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) draft recommendations for testing.
  • Developed shared decision making quality measures for prostate cancer screening, with involvement and feedback from urology, oncology, primary care and preventive medicine communities. In June, these measures were shared with these communities via a special CMS Spotlight Series meeting, and the measures were posted for public comment in October.

Summer Medical Student Fellowships

Completed studies to enhance research funding opportunities:

  • 25-year retrospective analysis for the Research Scholar Award program
  • Research workforce analysis for urology surgeon-scientists
  • Physician Scientist Residency Training Award

Addresses a critical gap in the urology research workforce by supporting an intensive, three-year research training program during urology residency to enable physician scientists to successful compete for independent research funding later in their careers.

  • Research Education for Community Practices

To increase opportunities for community-based urologists to engage in research, and to address the need for increased clinical trials for urology patients.

  • Success in Community-based Urology Research Workshop

Focusing on the essential elements of successful community-based research, the benefits to practices and their patients, and providing networking opportunities with leaders in community-based research.

GUIDELINES

Dr. Rainer Engel Exhibit

    January 2017

Dr. Rainer Engel, curator of the William P. Didusch Center for Urologic History for 19 years and AUA Historian for six years, collected many unusual artifacts in his time and staged 17 exhibits on the history of medicine at annual meetings throughout the United States. He and his beloved wife, Dorothy, spent many hours working in the museum, redesigning it once at the AUA Headquarters on Charles Street and again when the AUA moved to Linthicum.

History of the Catheter

    April 2017

The Didusch Museum has a new exhibit on the history of the catheter, one of the earliest medical devices created and used on many continents since antiquity. Fascinating artifacts illuminate this exhibit: sets of antique silver catheters, early ivory and gutta-percha catheters, a copy of the silver catheter Ben Franklin created for his brother, a hollow walking cane and an umbrella (both ivory-tipped) that provide storage for catheter and lubricant so the carrier could discretely self-catheterize.

A Renal Retrospective

    May 2017

The history of the kidney (a renal retrospective) was presented in Boston as part of the American Urological Association's 2017 Annual Meeting. The kidney is the organ that rather defines urologists and centers them on the entire genito-urinary system. Learning about its rich history is a fascinating and important lesson for urologists.
