2016 Urology Residency Match Results Announced

LINTHICUM, MD, January 20, 2016—Medical students wishing to specialize in urology learned where they will complete their residency earlier today, as results from the highly competitive Urology Residency Match program were issued to 417 students and 124 registered programs.

There were 468 students registered for the 2016 Urology Residency Match, and nearly 90 percent submitted preference lists vying for 295 available residency positions. Of those who submitted lists, 71 percent matched when the matching algorithm was processed, leaving only one vacancy unmatched.

Medical students begin the residency application process at the beginning of their final year in medical school. After they apply to various registered programs across the country, programs then invite selected candidates for interviews, which are held in the fall and early winter. Once the interview period is over, both registered parties submit their preference lists to the American Urological Association (AUA) who has performed the Match annually on behalf of the Society of University Urologists for more than 25 years.

"Each year we look forward to helping a growing number of medical students start their journey toward becoming urologists," said AUA Office of Education Chair Victor Nitti, MD. "We are pleased to participate in such a critical milestone for these talented men and women."

On average, participants submitted 65 applications, with programs receiving an average of 251 applications. Programs granted an average of 36 interviews, with potential residents taking an average of 10 interviews. Matched applicants had an average of 14.26 programs on their preference lists.

"We are especially pleased to see an increase in the number of senior medical students matched," said AUA Residents Committee Chair Benjamin Ristau, MD. "Nearly seven percent more senior medical students registered and were matched this year over last, a very positive trend."
