Baltimore, MD, January 3, 2017–The American Urological Association (AUA) today announced the list of 2017 AUA Award recipients who will be recognized at the Association’s Annual Meeting in Boston, MA this May. Marking its 54^thanniversary, the ceremony in Boston will celebrate this year’s honoree physician researchers and educators for their contributions to the field of medicine, the specialty of urology, and the AUA.

The following awards will be presented:

Ramon Guiteras Award: The Ramon Guiteras Award is presented annually to an individual who is deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the art and science of urology. Robert C. Flanigan, MD, will receive this award for outstanding contributions to the art and science of urology as a surgeon, educator, leader and investigator, most notably in the field of uro-oncology.

Hugh Hampton Young Award: The Hugh Hampton Young Award is presented annually to an individual for their outstanding contributions to the study of genitourinary tract disease. S. Larry Goldenberg, CM, OCB, MD, will receive this year’s award for outstanding contributions in the study and treatment of prostatic diseases and for spearheading the development and implementation of a national men's health program.

Gold Cystoscope Award: The Gold Cystoscope Award is presented annually to a urologist distinguished by outstanding contributions to the profession within 10 years of completing residency training. Shahrokh F. Shariat, MD,will receive this award for seminal contributions to urologic oncology in the areas of epigenomics, oncologic biomarkers and predictive nomograms.

Lifetime Achievement Award: The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to an individual who has been deemed to have made outstanding contributions to advance the mission and goals of the AUA. Gerald Sufrin, MD,will receive this award for his outstanding dedication to urologic education, research and advocacy at the National Institutes of Health, and as AUA Treasurer during the construction of the new AUA Headquarters building in Linthicum, MD.

Victor A. Politano Award: The Victor A. Politano Award is presented annually to an individual for outstanding research and work in the field of incontinence and for enhancing the treatment of incontinent patients, thereby helping to improve their quality of life. Karl J. Kreder Jr., MD, MBA, will receive this award for his more than two decades of research and clinical excellence in the area of urinary dysfunction and incontinence.

William P. Didusch Art and History Award: The William P. Didusch Art and History Award promotes and recognizes contributions to urological art, including, but not limited to, illustrations, sculpture, still photography, motion pictures and television productions. Friedrich H. Moll, MD, will receive this year’s award foroutstanding contributions to the history of urology, especially the history of endoscopy, the transfer of science and knowledge between Europe and North America and the fate of German urologists under National Socialism.

Distinguished Contribution Award: The Distinguished Contribution Awards are presented annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of urology, including, but not limited to, contributions made in a sub-specialty area, for military career service or for humanitarian efforts. The following individuals will be recognized with this award:

• Anthony A. Caldamone, MD, for significant contributions to academic urology and exemplary humanitarian dedication to pediatric urologic missions in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.
• James E. Lingeman, MD, for seminal contributions to the understanding of the pathogenesis of nephrolithiasis and innovation in minimally invasive surgical approaches to kidney stone disease.
• C. Lowell Parsons, MD, for outstanding contributions to the understanding of glycosaminoglycans in the permeability of bladder epithelium which led to fundamental insights into the etiology and effective treatment of interstitial cystitis.

Distinguished Service Awards: The Distinguished Service Awards are presented annually to individuals who are deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the goals of the AUA. The following individuals will receive this award:

• Tomas L. Griebling, MD, MPH, for years of outstanding service in educating and researching the field of geriatric urology for the AUA, the South Central Section and The Journal of Urology®.
• Stephen Y. Nakada, MD, for outstanding service and leadership on the AUA Board of Directors, North Central Section, American Board of Urology, Endourological Society and the Society of Academic Urologists.
• David F. Penson, MD, MPH, for outstanding leadership as AUA Public Policy Council Chair during a time of dramatic change in the U.S. health care system.

Gold Cane Award: The Gold Cane Award is presented to a senior urologist distinguished by outstanding contributions to the profession, as well as to the AUA. John J. Mulcahy, MD, PhD, is this year’s award recipient for his outstanding dedication as an academic leader, a mentor who has trained multiple generations of urologists and as an outstanding innovator in urologic prosthetic therapy.

Presidential Citations: Presidential Citations are presented to individuals deemed to have significantly promoted the cause of urology. Each recipient is chosen by the AUA President. This honor will be bestowed upon the following individuals:

• Allen Wen-Hsiang Chiu, MD, for outstanding leadership and contributions to the advancement of urologic science and education throughout Asia.
• Elspeth M. McDougall, MD, for outstanding contributions to education and innovative learning methods in urology.
• Craig A. Peters, MD, for an innovative career in pediatric urology as well as leadership and service to the AUA.
• Mike B. Siroky, MD, for a career dedicated to the understanding and advancement of the field of neurourology.
• Garo M. Tertzakian, MD, for 30 years of dedicated humanitarian work in advancing urologic care in Armenia.
• Ralph W. de Vere White, MD,for outstanding contributions to teaching and research in the field of uro-oncology.
