American Urological Association Announces New Physician Scientist Residency Training Award Program
BALTIMORE, MD-The American Urological Association (AUA), a premier urologic association, today announced the initiation of a pilot program through the new Physician Scientist Residency Training Award, a funding mechanism aimed at young urology researchers and supported through the AUA's Urology Care Foundation. ,
A program relatively rare in the field of urology, but common in other medical and surgical fields, the Physician Scientist Residency Training Award program will support a three-year research training program embedded within residency and will open on May 3, 2017 to all urology residency programs wishing to apply for this opportunity.
"This new program is designed to grow the population of surgeon-scientists who can effectively lead robust research programs, successfully compete for independent research funding and more effectively engage in basic and translational research," said Aria F. Olumi, MD, AUA Research Chair. "It truly enhances the portfolio of research grants offered by the Urology Care Foundation, and supports the AUA in its mission to increase and maintain the workforce of urology physician-scientists and researchers."
The AUA, through its Urology Care Foundation, has a longstanding and robust history of investing in urologic research and has catalyzed the development of many of the outstanding physician-scientists and researchers that are leaders in urology today. Since 1975, the AUA and the Urology Care Foundation have provided nearly $30 million to support over 750 young investigators.
The award will be competed to all urology residency programs through a peer-reviewed evaluation process, and approximately three Program Sites will be approved to participate in an early, special residency match program to fill the initial trainee position. Medical students will be invited to apply for the available trainee position in the summer of 2018.
