AUA Names James M. Dupree, MD, MPH as 2017 Gallagher Health Policy Scholar

BALTIMORE, MD, December 7, 2016- The American Urological Association (AUA) today announced that  James M. Dupree, MD, MPH, has been selected as the 2017 Gallagher Health Policy Scholar. This program is designed to train the next generation of urologists for leadership positions in health policy, and the selection process is highly competitive.

Gallagher scholars spend a full year engaged in critical seminars, conferences and meetings at the national level, receive mentoring from AUA physicians in senior roles and participate in a week-long health policy seminar for surgeons sponsored by the American College of Surgeons and held at Brandeis University. Scholars also engage in other educational activities that ensure their immersion in and understanding of health policy issues of importance to urology. The award was created in honor of former AUA Executive Director G. James Gallagher.

“The selection process was an extremely competitive one; applicants had strong letters of recommendation and exceptional credentials,” said AUA Public Policy Chair Dr. Chris Gonzalez.  “Dr. Dupree has a track record of advocating for the AUA and is actively engaged in public policy. He has the passion to be a great leader within the AUA.”

Dr. Dupree is an Assistant Professor of Urology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is a graduate of Duke University and Northwestern University, and completed his residency in Urology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a fellowship in male infertility at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Dupree is an active member of the American Urological Association and the American Board of Urology. He is licensed to practice medicine in Michigan and is well recognized for his research on health policy and male infertility. Dr. Dupree lectures physicians and students about health policy and urology care.

Dr. Dupree is director of the Michigan Value Collaborative, a quality improvement collaborative that aims to improve the quality of hospital-based care in Michigan.  He is also a member of the AUA Specialty Society/American Medical Association (AMA) Relative-value Update Committee (RUC) Workgroup that values urologic procedures identified through the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and new codes developed by the AMA Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Editorial Panel.  Dr. Dupree is also chair of the AUA Alternative Payment Model (APM) Workgroup that will develop a urologic APM for nephrectomy and prostatectomy.  In addition, Dr. Dupree was appointed to the CMS MACRA Episode Based Resource Use Measures Clinical Committee to develop episode-based resource use measures suitable for use in Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).
