American Urological Association Announces New Director of Research
BALTIMORE, Nov. 14, 2024 — The American Urological Association is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Director of Research, Johanny Kugelman-Tonos, PhD.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Kugelman-Tonos join us as our new Director of Research,” said Steven Kaplan, MD, chair of the AUA Research Council. “Her energy, passion and commitment to urologic discovery will be a great asset to our efforts.”
Johanny brings a wealth of management and biomedical research expertise. Before joining the AUA, Johanny served as a scientific program manager for Goldbelt Frontier administering government grants and contracts in support of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs and other government agencies. In her previous role, she applied scientific, administrative and organizational knowledge for the management of basic and translational science, multi-institutional and multidisciplinary groups, advancement of treatments and clinical trials research. Her education and research activities have strongly focused on biochemical principles in prostate cancer biology, therapeutics development and biochemistry. In addition to her extensive experience and commitment to biomedical research, Johanny holds a Doctorate degree in Pathobiology from the University of Texas at El Paso.
“I am delighted to join the AUA as the new Director of Research,” said Johanny. “This is a great opportunity to support paradigm-shifting research and catalyze the advancement of health care solutions. The new structure of the Office of Research brings new perspectives and innovative approaches to better sustain and support the next generation of scientists and to ensure the future and success of urologic research.”
In her new role, Johanny will work closely with AUA’s Research Council, Urology Care Foundation (UCF) and other AUA departments to better support urological research through funding, advocacy and education. The Office of Research aims to increase interest in the field of urology by investing in the next generation of scientists and preparing them to become successful research leaders.
